This week, we’re featuring Tobias Grabmann, Sr Controls Technologist/Sr Programmer at Genesis Buildings Controls. What began as an apprenticeship in Germany grew into a career in controls and automation—now focused on designing and programming the systems that keep buildings running smarter.

I began my career as an electrician in Germany, where I built a strong technical foundation and developed a deep understanding of electrical systems. During my apprenticeship, my interest in controls and automation grew, which led me to move into the controls industry. Over the past 20 years, I have worked extensively in this field, gaining hands-on experience and deep expertise that strengthened my attention to detail, precision, and quality.
Over time, I moved further into programming and design, where I discovered my passion for developing control logic and creating efficient, innovative automation solutions. I have always enjoyed solving problems, especially when systems become more complex and require structured thinking and creativity. Today, as a Senior BMS programmer, I design and implement smart building systems, integrate different BMS platforms, and develop home automation solutions that improve comfort, efficiency, and sustainability.
In my current role as a lead programmer and problem solver, I am responsible for maintaining company programming standards and ensuring reliable project delivery. I work closely with colleagues, support team development, and contribute to continuous improvement. I am thankful for the trust placed in me and value the responsibility that comes with it. I started early with computer technology, and I have increasingly pursued IT with a focus on network technology, which has further expanded my technical skills and understanding.
My professional journey has been shaped by adaptability, continuous learning, and a strong work ethic. I take pride in my structured approach, clear communication, and ability to collaborate effectively within diverse teams. These qualities have helped me grow and build strong professional relationships.
Looking ahead, I see AI-driven foresight as the next major step in building automation. The ability to predict system behavior, optimize performance in real time, and proactively address issues will transform how buildings are managed. I am motivated to continue developing my skills and contribute to this evolution.
