Advocacy
We are passionate advocates for mechanical contractors in British Columbia and are committed to bridging conversations and propelling the industry forward. We represent the largest segment of trades in construction in the province, an industry which accounts for nearly 10% of GDP and employs 240,000 people.
We work with all levels of government by responding to the needs of a changing industry and championing issues that impact our members.
Training Accessibility & Flexibility
Without strategic investment and reform in BC’s mechanical trades education and training, we risk falling behind in workforce development and will struggle to maintain a skilled workforce essential to the province’s future.
Our Ask:
- Collaborate with MCABC to evolve the traditional skills training learning model, including the design, development, format and delivery of curriculum.
- Modernize trades training and education:
- Update apprenticeship programs to integrate new technologies and offer flexible learning options.
- Allow apprentices and workers to earn while they learn by removing EI restrictions.
- Increase the funding for mechanical trades training to open more seats to reduce wait lists and support those starting their careers or looking to retrain, particularly from industries impacted by tariffs.
Workforce Competency
Maintaining the existing 10 primary mechanical contractor trades strengthens the skilled mechanical trades workforce, maintains high safety and competency standards and ensures a sustainable, well-trained labour pool that can effectively meet the growing demand for heat pump installation without compromising public safety or workforce quality.
Our Ask:
- Protect high-skill, high-paying jobs and keep B.C.’s mechanical contracting workforce strong.
- Upskill and cross-train existing mechanical trades enabling immediate access to qualified, competent tradespeople to install and service residential heat pumps.
Prompt Payment
The lack of Prompt Payment Legislation unfairly strains mechanical contractor businesses and trades, causing financial instability and threatening the timely completion of critical infrastructure BC projects, especially during this time of tariff uncertainty.
Our Ask:
- Bring certainty to BC mechanical contractor businesses and tradespeople during these uncertain times by advancing Prompt Payment Legislation quickly—giving them the same protection already in place across the rest of Canada.
- Stand strong for BC’s mechanical contractors and tradespeople by enacting Prompt Payment Legislation.
